Hatchet 3 review

Hatchet 3 is the 2013 horror film of the Hatchet series. It follows Victor Crowley's murderous rampage across Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder plays Victor Crowley and Brian Quinn is Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanderbilt plays Misty.

The movie's special effects are its biggest strengths. Hatchet 3 uses a majority of practical makeup effects and sets. This is a departure from many horror movies nowadays that heavily rely on CG effects. It also features some really horrifying moments.

Kane Hodder is a standout among the cast, and he's an intimidating villain. It feels like an '80s slasher movie, with the dialogue being a bit too tongue-in-cheek and campy. There are also some genuinely funny moments throughout that provide comedic contrast against all of the gut-wrenching action on screen.

Due to the budget being $1 million, most places were reused from earlier movies. The house on the lake that was used twice in the film was a prime instance. A lot of the film appears to be a re-use from other movies in the franchise. Hatchet or Hatchet2 (blog post) may feel it's a familiar film.

Overall, Hatchet 3 was an enjoyable series. I enjoyed the violent thrills it provided as well as the engaging performances of its cast members.
